Introduction

Growing up, my mom, my sister and I always bonded over our love for fashion and till date still do. I never realised how interested I was until a few years ago. The ongoing trends, styles, fashion shows, the met gala, EVERYTHING! It just always excited me. And here I am, at NIFT, finally able to live that dream. Where instead of just being mesmerized by the fashion world, I learn how it works and I learn the skill behind it. I am a 19-year-old artist and small business owner. I sell my artwork through Instagram, where I primarily customise sneakers, bags, jackets, jeans and also work on portraits and paintings. I had always told my parents that I wanted to study at an art college and I have worked towards that goal diligently, by attaining the elementary and intermediate grade certifications in drawing, and also by gaining some hands-on experience from my art business.

Attending NIFT for its fashion communication programme is a natural step for me, given the number of accomplished professors that I would be privileged to learn from. I am extremely interested in the communication program, with a specialisation in graphic design. While I know that it is extremely competitive, I also know that art runs through my veins. My mother is an artist as well and has been my biggest inspiration, role model and supporter. I have learned so much over the course of managing my business this past year. I want to be an outstanding graphic designer. However, to embark on that journey I have so much to learn and a lot more to do academically, given that all my experience until now can only take me so far. This is why I am ready for a bachelor’s degree at NIFT. It offers an ideal environment where I can develop new skills and hone the ones I already have. Despite the skills gained from single-handedly managing my small business, such as marketing, time management, bookkeeping, videography and editing, I lack sufficient exposure to the design domain; thus, I believe this programme will provide me with the tools, support, and foundation necessary for ultimately becoming a successful artist. I am extremely passionate about graphic design, and I’m familiar with Procreate and Photoshop software. As for my hobbies, I have explored a number of outlets for my creative energy. I have taken 8 classical singing exams and
also play the guitar. I think of myself as someone who tries her hand at exploring all kinds of things at least once.
